GLOBAL FOOD AND BEVERAGES NEWS

Cocoa and Coffee Prices Rebound on Renewed Supply Concerns

Cocoa prices soared 30 percent in December, averaging over $10,000 per metric ton. This sharp rise was fueled by concerns about adverse weather conditions in West Africa, along with robust seasonal demand.

Arabica coffee prices jumped 13 percent in December (month-over-month), reflecting a year-over-year increase of over 60 percent. Robusta prices also climbed 5 percent (m/m), with prices more than doubling compared to the same time last year.

Cocoa Prices Rebound as North American Demand Remains Strong

Cocoa prices have experienced a rebound, driven by sustained demand in North America. Meanwhile, the tightening global cocoa stockpiles continue to support price levels. Cocoa inventories monitored by the ICE (Intercontinental Exchange) at U.S. ports have been on a downward trend for the past 18 months, reaching a 21-year low of 1,292,153 bags.

In Europe, the European Cocoa Association reported a 5.3% year-on-year decline in Q4 cocoa grindings, which totaled 331,853 metric tons, marking the lowest level in over four years. Similarly, the Cocoa Association of Asia noted a 0.5% year-on-year decrease in Q4 cocoa grindings in the region, which fell to 210,111 metric tons—also the lowest in four years.

U.S. Agriculture Imports

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) projects that the U.S. will import $215.5 billion in agricultural products during fiscal year (FY) 2025. This is an increase of $3.5 billion from the August projection, largely driven by the strong U.S. dollar and resilient domestic demand.

Legislations

Beginning December 30, 2025, all coffee imported into the European Union (EU) must be free of deforestation and comply with additional requirements. This mandate is a result of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which was enacted in June 2023.

The USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) forecasts a 4.2% year-over-year increase in global coffee production for FY 2025, projecting a total of 176.235 million bags. This growth is primarily driven by higher Arabica and Robusta production in major coffee-producing regions such as Brazil and Indonesia.

Coffee Consumption

Global coffee consumption is projected to increase by 5.1 million bags, reaching 168.1 million, with the European Union and the United States expected to see the largest gains.

China’s Expanding Coffee Consumption

Tea remains the dominant beverage in China, but coffee consumption is growing in popularity, particularly among younger professionals in urban areas who are increasingly buying coffee outside the home. Over the past decade, China’s coffee consumption has soared nearly 150 percent, and it is expected to reach 6.3 million bags (60 kilograms) in 2024/25.

European Union coffee imports are projected to rise by 1.0 million bags to 45.0 million, driven by increased shipments from Vietnam and Indonesia. The top suppliers for 2023/24 are expected to include Brazil (43%), Vietnam (22%), Uganda (7%), and Honduras (6%). Ending stocks are anticipated to continue their decline, reaching 8.0 million bags.

The United States, the second-largest importer of coffee beans, is expected to see an increase of 800,000 bags, reaching 22.3 million due to growing consumption. Major suppliers for 2023/24 are forecast to include Brazil (32%), Colombia (20%), Vietnam (8%), and Honduras (7%). Ending stocks are projected to remain steady at 5.7 million bags.
