Palm oil is forecast to be the world’s most produced and internationally traded edible oil. Palm oil is the most traded vegetable oil in the world today and has been used as a dietary constituent for nearly five thousand years.
The oil is obtained from the mesocarp of the Elaeis guineensis fruit, simply by cooking, mashing and pressing. In this process, the seeds are separated and after cracking and removing the shell, the kernel can be processed to yield palm kernel oil and palm kernel cake.
Malaysia and Indonesia account for 85% of production and 89% of global exports. The remainder of the world’s palm oil is produced in other countries such as Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Cameroon, Nigeria, Colombia, Thailand, and Papua New Guinea, frequently by companies with large Malaysian investment or ownership.
Palm oil with an annual production of 25-27 million tons, is the second most produced oil in the world. The palm oil industry in Malaysia and Indonesia is financed by the state, international private banks, and the international donor community including the World Bank.
Malaysia is expected to maintain its position as the world’s largest producer of Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO) given continued support from the country’s oil palm companies and the government. Currently, Malaysia contributes over 50% of CSPO in the world, followed by Indonesia at 35%.
Certified sustainable palm oil is about 35% more expensive than conventional palm oil. The world’s biggest importers of palm oil are India, China, and Pakistan, followed by the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Egypt, and Germany.
China, Pakistan, the EU, India and the United States are the primary importers of Malaysian palm oil products.
Numerous applications make palm oil a versatile ingredient.

LEGISLATION
The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) creates a certification standard to improve the social and environmental performance of the world’s most productive oil crop.
The Netherlands is the first country to commit itself to using only sustainable palm oil. Dutch businesses are Europe’s largest importer and exporter of palm oil (2 million tons annually) with much of it going into products sold throughout the European Union.
Sustainability requires the following:
● no destruction of natural forests
● no burning for land clearing
● watercourse protection by buffer zones of natural vegetation
● integrated pest management to reduce pesticide use
● proper treatment of mill effluent and other wastes
● respect for customary land-use rights of local communities
● transparency in companies’ environmental and social policies and practices, with high-level standards of practice and independent monitoring and verification.
Since December 2014, food packaging in the EU may no longer use the generic terms “vegetable fat” or “vegetable oil” in the ingredients list. Food producers are required to list the specific type of vegetable fat used, including palm oil.
PALM OIL PRODUCTS
RBD PALM KERNEL OIL
REFINED, BLEACHED & DEODORISED (RBD) PALM KERNEL OIL
This oil is derived from the kernel or seed of the fruit in oil palms.
It contains more saturated fats than palm oil and is commonly used in commercial cooking since the higher saturated fat content allows for greater stability at higher temperatures and better shelf life.
RBD Palm Oil
Refined, Bleached & Deodorised (RBD) Palm Oil
RBD palm oil is obtained from refining crude palm oil. It is a light yellow liquid and semi-solid at room temperature, melting to a clear yellow liquid on slight heating.
RBD palm oil is used as frying oil for food industries such as instant noodles and snack food. It can also be used in manufacture of margarine, shortening, ice cream, condensed milk and soap.
RBD PALM STEARIN
REFINED, BLEACHED & DEODORISED (RBD) PALM STEARIN
RBD palm stearin is obtained from fractionating refined palm oil to separate olein from stearin. It is a white solid at room temperature, melting to a clear yellow liquid on heating.
RBD palm stearin is used in margarine and shortening industries. It is also used in soap, candles and oleochemical industries.
RBD PALM OLEIN
REFINED, BLEACHED & DEODORISED (RBD) PALM OLEIN
RBD palm olein is obtained from fractionating refined palm oil to separate liquid parts (olein) from solid parts (stearin). It is a clear yellow liquid at room temperature.
RBD palm olein is used as cooking oil as well as frying oil for food industries such as snack food and ready-to-eat food. It is also used as a raw material for margarine and shortening.
CRUDE PALM OIL
CRUDE PALM OIL (CPO)
Crude palm oil is obtained from the mesocarp of fresh fruit bunches.
It is an orange liquid and semi-solid at room temperature, melting to a clear red-orange liquid on slight heating.
Crude palm oil can be refined and further fractionated to widen its application.
